“Fix” singer, who is the first artist signed to an indie label, has his first chart-topper.

Chris Lane is proving one of country music’s true underdog victory stories. The North Carolina native is not only signed to a small, indie label, he’s that label’s very first artist. So being at Number One with “Fix” this week, on both the Billboard Country Airplay and Mediabase charts, is a huge feat. Lane chalks it up to a sign of the times, as the music itself can often trump industry politics these days.

“When it comes down to it, it’s all about good music and what makes people react. That wins over everything else,” he
tells Rolling Stone Country. “But being the first artist on a new record label, there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that. So we’re working really hard.”

The day before “Fix” officially topped the charts, Lane threw out the first pitch at the Chicago White Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles game. He was in the Windy City to perform later that night at Tinley Park, as an opener for Rascal Flatts on the trio’s Rhythm and Roots tour — a gig he calls “a dream.”

“It wasn’t that long ago that I was buying tickets to go watch Rascal Flatts in concert,” he says. “The fun part about this tour is that it kicked off in Charlotte and in Raleigh, North Carolina, which are home markets – and I grew up going to those amphitheaters where I saw Rascal Flatts. To be a part of the same tour all those years later is the coolest thing ever. And those guys like to play golf as much as I do, so it’s golf during the day and music at night. . . It don’t get no better!”
